Huang Ming-Che (Michell)

About the Artist

Huang Ming-Che, born in 1948 in Dongshan, Yilan, decided to pursue a career in the fine arts after graduating from high school. He moved to Taipei to study under renowned artists and attend various art studios. However, despite his dedication to learning, he struggled with breaking through the challenges of sculpting plaster casts and charcoal sketches, and ultimately did not enter the traditional academic system. Nevertheless, this did not hinder Huang Ming-Che’s artistic path. He continued to refine his skills through personal effort and practice, eventually developing excellent realistic painting techniques and gradually gaining recognition in the art world.

Huang Ming-Che's early works primarily focused on flat painting. From the 1970s, his rural realism evolved into the 1980s humanistic sentimentalism and later into the 1990s semi-abstract, dazzlingly gorgeous metropolitan style. The evolution in both the content and form of his works not only reflects his ongoing exploration of the essence of creation but also his sensitivity to the changing social environment. Huang Ming-Che has shown a deep interest in research and experimentation with elements such as color, form, and lines in his works, constantly integrating these elements into his paintings. These varying stages of his work have long been highly regarded and affirmed by awards, critics, and collectors.

Due to his strong interest in diverse forms of creation, Huang Ming-Che's exploration into three-dimensional art began to emerge in the early 1990s. He invested a great deal of time and effort preparing for his three-dimensional works, which he finally unveiled in 1996. Unlike typical sculptural artists, Huang Ming-Che’s three-dimensional creations retained the characteristics of his paintings. He drew inspiration from elements in his paintings, transforming them into units with unique style. For color application, he chose singular and vivid tones, using the interplay of colors to give his three-dimensional works a sense of variation and vitality. In addition to these three-dimensional works, which are composed of different units, Huang Ming-Che’s creations can be rearranged and repositioned according to the characteristics of the space, allowing them to truly engage in dialogue with their environment.
