Zhao Baokang
About the Artist
Zhao Baokang was born in 1953 in Shanghai, China. His artworks embody profound elements of Chinese philosophy and religious connotations, evoking a sense of tranquility and deep reflection in viewers. Although he works on oil canvas, he strives to achieve an ink-like texture, presenting intricate and subtle tonal variations.
In terms of materials, Zhao Baokang utilizes various black media with different textures and light absorption properties, including paint, oil pigments, coatings, ink, toner, and acrylic. Through his unique techniques, he creates a range of textures on the canvas—such as cracking, peeling, wrinkling, bubbling, sand-like surfaces, brushstrokes, and powder spraying. These effects contrast sharply with smooth, flat-painted areas, forming a rhythmic language of black tones that offers a deeply immersive visual experience.
As a member of the China Artists Association, Zhao Baokang currently serves as the head of the painting program at the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts, Fudan University.
