Jan Chin-Shui
About the Artist
Jan Chin-Shui was born in 1953 in Zhuolan Township, Miaoli County, Taiwan, and graduated from the Western Painting Division of the Fine Arts Department at National Taiwan Normal University. After settling in Taipei, he maintained a deep emotional connection to the beauty and cultural heritage of his Hakka homeland. His paintings merge Eastern humanistic traditions with profound reflections on nature. His talent earned him the Gold Medal at the National Oil Painting Exhibition in 1989, and in the same year, he was invited to participate in an exchange exhibition at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. During his travels to over 50 art museums across 10 countries, he discovered that outstanding artworks possess cultural depth, a sense of their era, and personal distinctiveness. This journey inspired him to seek his own unique style, leading him to realize that deeply rooting his work in his cultural heritage was essential for artistic creation.
Jan Chin-Shui established himself in the art world with a distinctive style, drawing from the themes of traditional Chinese ink landscape painting while using oil painting techniques to convey a contemporary feel. His work evolved from abstract landscapes to more meditative, atmospheric landscapes, embracing a Zen-like sense of tranquility and liberation. His compositions are bold and majestic, favoring grand gestures over intricate details, imbuing his paintings with spiritual energy and rich cultural resonance.
