About the Artist
Yang Cheng-Yuan, born in 1947 in Hualien, Taiwan, entered the Fine Arts Department of National Taiwan Normal University in 1967. In 1981, he pursued oil painting at Osaka University of Arts in Japan, receiving rigorous artistic training. After returning to Taiwan, he joined the Shiqing Printmaking Society and continued his deep exploration of oil painting and printmaking. His works have gained international recognition, winning numerous prestigious awards, including the "Merit Award" at the Asia International Contemporary Art Exhibition in Japan, the "Special Honor Award" at the FERROL International Print Exhibition in Spain, the "Silver Prize" at the IMA International Contemporary Art Exhibition in Japan, the "Grand Prize" at the Asia International Contemporary Art Exhibition in Japan, the "Chairman’s Award" at the Republic of China International Print Biennale, the "Golden Goblet Award" from the Chinese Painting Society, the "Award" from the National Culture and Arts Foundation, and the "Zhongxing Art Medal" from the Taiwan Literature and Art Association.
Yang Cheng-Yuan excels in using juxtaposition techniques to skillfully present multiple aspects of contemporary life and information. His works break the continuity of time and the integrity of space, revealing the deeper essence of art. With meticulous and perceptive insight, he adeptly employs various painting elements, allowing cold geometric lines to blend elegantly on the canvas. The heterogeneous symbols in his works are not randomly arranged, nor do they follow a fixed logical connection. Beyond the inherent meanings of these symbols, the "syntax" interactions between objects create new interpretations, forming a rich multi-layered dialogue. This multiplicity of meanings infuses his works with complexity and depth, generating an artistic expression of immense value.
