About the Artist
Li Yuan-Heng (1936-2020) was born in Lukang, Changhua. In 1955, he entered the "Taiwan Provincial Normal University Art Department" (now "National Taiwan Normal University Department of Fine Arts"), where he studied under renowned teachers such as Liao Ji-Chun, Li Shi-Qiao, Ma Bai-Shui, Lin Yu-Shan, and Chen Hui-Kun, establishing a solid and profound foundation for his artistic creation. His works are characterized by a realist approach to objects, with a focus on composition, color, and emotional expression.
In 1966, Li Yuan-Heng went to France for further study at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, specializing in sculpture and bas-relief. During his time in France, he actively absorbed Western painting and sculpture techniques, incorporating them into his own creative style, which primarily centered on figurative work and sought a relaxed, elegant, and gentle aesthetic.
Li Yuan-Heng lived in France for more than 40 years, during which his paintings and sculptures were consistently outstanding. In early 1989, he returned to Taiwan to hold an exhibition and published an essay titled "Reflections After Twenty-Three Years in Paris," in which he expressed his pursuit of the serene beauty of timeless aesthetics. His work reflected an idealistic and symbolic outlook, attempting to explore the deeper truths of human nature—truth, goodness, and beauty—amidst the struggles, darkness, melancholy, and fear of reality.
