Hsu Pi-Hua (Jessica)
About the Artist
Hsu Pi-Hua, born in 1957 in Taiwan, graduated in 1979 with a degree in Education from National Chengchi University (NCCU). In 1987, she went to the United States, where she majored in Art History at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1989, she furthered her studies in painting at the Boston Museum School. After returning to Taiwan in 1993, she settled in the old hillside area of Taipei for over twenty years. "Nature's landscapes became her spiritual mentor, and the canvas and countryside became her place of practice," and she pursued her artistic journey with the spirit of both farming and reading. She is a joyful contemporary artist who walks the path of art.
Hsu’s art is deeply nourished by a wide range of cultural practices, including music, dance, writing, ikebana, meditation, and immersion in the natural landscape. Guided by a philosophy of subtraction, she has developed a distinctive style she refers to as “literati abstraction,” which embodies Eastern aesthetics and feminine energy. Her work deftly incorporates Western media and elements from her surroundings, using bright and clear colors that resonate with contemporary trends. Her brushwork, however, uniquely embodies the strength and spirit of traditional Chinese calligraphy. Moving seamlessly between abstract expressionism, cubism, and color field painting, her compositions are spacious, fluid, and charged with a positive, vital energy.
